LOS ANGELES – Today Speaker Emeritus Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) announced significant endorsements from key women’s organizations in her bid to represent the people of the 33rd Congressional District.
Endorsing Bass are: the National Organization for Women (NOW), the Women's Political Committee, the Women's Campaign Forum, and Planned Parenthood.
“The Planned Parenthood Action Fund is proud to support Karen Bass for Congress,” said Planned Parenthood Action Fund President Cecile Richards. “Even in tough economic times, Karen has always been a strong advocate for programs that protect women’s access to affordable health care—including important preventive services like breast and cervical cancer screening, contraception and STD testing and treatment. As a member of Congress, she will be a powerful advocate for women’s health and survivors of domestic violence.”
“I am proud to have the support of these organizations,” said Bass. “I have always said that I have been able to achieve what I have by standing on the shoulders of those that came before me. Many great women have blazed the trail that I hope to follow as a Congressional representative. I will continue working to uphold the values that are important to California’s women and continue working to protect our teachers, healthcare workers, and human services employees.”
As Speaker, Bass was able to deliver bipartisan results such as protecting 600,000 children from losing their health care, restoring the governor’s cuts to domestic violence programs and helping Californians remain eligible for continued federal unemployment benefits.
Under Bass’ leadership the Assembly fast-tracked federal economic stimulus legislation that aided Californians who have been affected by the national economic crisis as well as jumpstarted billions of dollars of infrastructure projects across the state.
Bass has also been endorsed by the Honorable Diane Watson, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Congresswomen Maxine Waters, Zoe Lofgren, Jackie Speier, Lynn Woolsey, Yvette Clarke, Sheila Jackson Lee, the National Women’s Political Caucus, and many other elected officials and organizations including EMILY’s list.
